Snoring is something we cannot control voluntarily and unfortunately it may be responsible for both health and relationship issues in our everyday lives.
The CPAP machines are probably the most effective against snoring, however some clients find these machines very cumbersome and noisy. It may also be very difficult to take with them on holidays and camping trips.
The basic idea behind a snoring appliance is too keep the airways open so that when you breathe the air can pass through your wind pipe, unhindered, and so stopping the vibration in your throat that causes snoring.
If we think back to basic CPR, in order to open the airway, we lay the patient on their back and then we have to tilt the head backwards whilst supporting the neck, this opens the airway so that the patient can breathe.
The mechanics of the appliances are very similar in that they keep the lower jaw forward and open, this then keeps the airway open when you are lying down to sleep. The dental term for this appliance is a “Mandibular advancement splint”
At Custom Denture Clinic we work in conjunction with dentists to make a number of different kinds of snoring appliances for our patients. These range from MDSA type which uses a special clip that allows some movement to a fixed type that keeps your jaw locked into a specified place during your sleep. The dentist has a very special role in that they determine the amount of forward movement and opening of your mouth that is required of your jaw in order to keep the airways open.
The snoring appliances are handy in that they are small and effective and can be used solely or in conjunction with a CPAP machine when you are going away for the weekend camping trip or on your travels.
