Antibacterial denture cleaning tablets have been designed to remove stains and odour-causing bacteria when used correctly. Dentures, just like your natural teeth, need to be kept clean and plaque-free. Today we’re going to give you our top tips for cleaning dentures, to keep them in optimal condition for longer.
Denture Cleaning Dos And Don’ts
Clean dentures are an integral part of oral care. Just like your teeth, dentures can develop plaque build-up and can become stained and discoloured if they are not looked after.
Do…
… remove your dentures before cleaning and rising
… rinse your dentures after every meal. You don’t have to wait until the end of the day.
… make sure you remove denture adhesive at the end of the day. Putting new adhesive on top of old adhesive will create a build-up and cause irritation.
… make sure you soak your dentures overnight. Keeping your dentures moist helps them to retain their shape. You can soak your denture in a denture cleanser like Polident or Efferdent and leave it in a glass of water once you have cleaned it.
… make sure you give your dentures a deep clean every day, ideally with denture cleaning tablets. Denture cleaning tablets will remove any debris and plaque build-up and help your dentures retain their fresh, original colour.
Don’t…
… use whitening or abrasive toothpaste to clean dentures. It can cause damage to your false teeth.
… ignore a loose-fitting denture. Contact your dentist as soon as you become aware of a problem with the fit as it can cause mouth irritation and sore spots to develop.
… forget to visit your dentist for regular checkups.
… use boiling water for cleaning dentures. It can cause the denture to become misshapen.
How To Use Denture Cleaning Tablets
Fill a glass halfway with water. Use very warm (but not boiling hot) water and make sure the level is high enough to cover your denture. Drop one of the tablets into the water; you should see it fizz as it dissolves. Soak your denture for the recommended time on the pack. Using a soft toothbrush (that is different to the brush you use on your teeth), gently brush each of the teeth on your denture.
Once you have cleaned dentures, make sure you rinse them well under cold water to remove any traces of the denture cleaning solution.
Alternatives For Cleaning Dentures
If you do not have any denture cleaner, you can use a homemade solution of half hot water and half vinegar to clean dentures. Bicarbonate of soda and water also makes for an effective soaking solution that can remove plaque build-up. You must still brush them gently with a toothbrush, and make sure you rinse them well before putting them in your mouth.
