Practising good denture care ensures you maintain a high level of dental health and keeps your gums and soft tissue in good condition. Denture health also keeps your prosthesis in optimal condition and can help it last for longer. In this article, we are going to take a look at what constitutes denture health care and the practices you should be following for optimal oral health.
Denture Care — What It Means For You?
The good news is that caring for your dentures is very similar to caring for your natural teeth. Your denture health care routine should include:
Denture Health Care: Daily Cleaning
The cornerstone of denture health is cleaning your prosthesis daily. Reviews of research carried out on denture wearers reveal that many patients do not clean their prostheses thoroughly or regularly enough.
All you need to ensure good oral care are two components: a soft-bristled toothbrush and a denture cleanser. Make sure your denture cleanser is non-abrasive, so it doesn’t do any damage. Ensure you brush it carefully, inspecting the prosthesis for any plaque or debris. Don’t use toothpaste to clean your dentures, as it may cause damage. Because denture costs cannot be claimed from most private insurance plans, it makes sense to get maximum use from them.
Rinsing your dentures after eating and drinking is another good denture health practice.
Denture Care: Daily Soaking
Soaking your dentures every day is another essential practice in your denture care routine. Mechanical brushing doesn’t remove all the plaque that can accumulate, but soaking your prosthesis will ensure a high level of hygiene.
You can use denture soak, or you can make your own solution of half vinegar and water. Please note that denture cleansers should only be used once you have taken them out of your mouth and are not suitable for internal use. Make sure you rinse them thoroughly afterwards.
Give Your Mouth A Break
Never sleep with your dentures in. they need to be taken out overnight to give your gums a chance to heal. Leaving them in your mouth overnight can lead to a medical condition called denture stomatitis, an overgrowth of candida in your mouth, which requires treatment.
Denture Health: Visit Your Dental Practitioner Regularly
Ill-fitting dentures can cause irritation and need to be adjusted so that they fit you properly. Relining dentures may need to be done every two to three years.
Practising good denture health has a positive impact on your dental hygiene. It also looks after your prosthesis, giving you a longer lifespan and a more comfortable experience.
